Itzchak Tarkay was born in Subotica, on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. When he was only nine years old, Tarkay was sent to the Mathausen concentration camp by the Nazis. After the war, he returned home and developed an interest in art, and while still at school in Subotica, he won a prize for "excellence in painting." In 1949, his family emigrated to Israel. He received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, where he studied under the artist Schwartzman. Tarkay graduated from Avni Institute of Art in 1956. His one-man shows have been extensive in Israel, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States. His works are found in both public and private collections across the globe.
